Forest fires near the train tracks going from Cuzco to the ancient Inca citadel of Machu Picchu forced Peru Rail, the train company in charge of the area, to close down its services on Monday, as the fires spread out of control.

Burial Grounds Discovered Near Machu Picchu

Human remains have been uncovered in caves within the Machu Picchu Archaeological Park in Southern Peru. Eighty skeletons - dating back to over 500 years - were discovered accompanied with several artifacts and a stockpile of textiles. It is hoped that this will give clues in searching for the purpose that the Inca Citadel was constructed, and reinforce the idea that it was an important center for trade and commerce.

Peru's First Major Alternative Energy Project Begins

Construction of a wind farm that will provide 240 Megawatts to 80,000 families has been initiated by Peruvian company Iberoperuana Inversiones SAC. The "Parque Eólico San Andrés" (San Andres Wind Park) is being built in the coastal region of Paracas where desert winds and sunshine provide perfect conditions for wind turbines. The first turbine was inaugurated at the weekend and the entire project is hoped to be completed in less than two years.

95% of Peru′s Coffee Exported

Procafe, the Peruvian agency that regulates the national coffee industry, disclosed on Tuesday that 95 percent of the national coffee production is exported. The figure leaves national consumption to only 5 percent, which means that the per capita consumption of coffee in Peru is of 300 grams per year.

Peru Expected to Lead Latin American Development

Experts have predicted that Peru's GDP growth will be at the forefront of that in the Latin American region. This comes in the wake of Brazilian steel giant Gerdau announcing investment of $1.4 billion dollars into Siderperu, the company's Peruvian subsidiary. After meeting with Peruvian President Alan Garcia, Gerdau CEO Andre Gerdau Johannpeter stated "Peru is a strategic country … being a market with great potential and great development possibilities".

Increase in Handicraft Exports from Peru

Peru's handicraft exports totaled $28.3 million between January and July, an 8.5 percent increase over the same period last year. Main export items were textiles made from alpaca fur and decorated pottery, and the most important destination countries were the United States and New Zealand. The trade is extremely important in Peru and employs skilled workers from across the country.

Peruvian Constitution Translated into Quechua

In an effort to promote awareness of people's rights and social inclusion, Peru's Ministry of Justice presented the first official edition of Peru's bilingual Constitution this Monday. The majority of Peru's population speaks Quechua or dialects based on it, which did not receive official recognition until 1975.
