Montesinos is being prosecuted for allegedly ordering a bank to be set on fire so that he could frame his political opponents. He is currently serving a twenty year prison sentence for corruption and for aiding Colombian gunrunners.

President-elect Obama and his family have been on the lookout for the next presidential pooch. A Peruvian Hairless Dog has been offered by the Friends of the Peruvian Hairless Dog Association. As this breed is hypoallergenic, it would not cause strain on Obama's allergic daughter. The director of the Friends of this Peruvian dog association hopes if the dog is chosen, the presidential family will call him "Machu Picchu."

Legal action is to be taken by the Peruvian government in order to return thousands of artifacts taken by US explorer Hiram Bingham. The famous Yale archeologist and explorer was sent to Peru by the university in 1911 and returned to the US with thousands of artifacts from Machu Picchu. Peru has a history of disputes with Yale University over the appropriate method of returning these artifacts to their home country.

Finance ministers from various countries of the Pacific Rim met in Trujillo with the purpose to discuss the financial crisis and the G-8 for two days. The United States, Canada, China, South Korea, Chile, Mexico and Peru will have representatives at this event. This meeting comes a couple weeks before the commencement of the APEC summit that will start in Lima on November 20, 2008.

Diagnosed with colon cancer in February, Yma Sumac, "the Nightingale of the Andes" whose varied vocal range and eccentric personality made her famous in the 1950s, died at the age of 86. Highlighting her multi-octave range, her husband Moises Vivanco stressed that her voice was the only one of its kind. Yma Sumac, whose name means "How Pretty" in Quecha, presented herself as an Incan Priestess for American, European and Japanese audiences.

This is even No. 6 of 8 on the 2008 Association of Surfing Professionals Women's Would Tour held in the surfer's paradise of Mancora. A British botanist has claimed that the collection of orchids at the Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel in Cusco is the largest of its kind in the world. The President of the Orchid Society of Great Britain Henry Oakeley made the proclamation during the launch of his book which commemorates 20 years of on-site preservation of orchids at the hotel.
