Day 1: Puerto Maldonado/ Tambopata River Port/ Posada Amazonas

  • Upon arrival from Lima or Cuzco, you will be welcomed at the airport and be taken to our Puerto Maldonado headquarters.  While enjoying your first taste of the forest in our gardens we will ask you to pack only the necessary gear for your next few days, and leave the rest at our safe deposit. This helps us keep the boats and cargo light.
  • You will be received by your private bilingual guide and taken to the unique Posada Amazonas jungle lodge, situated on the land of the native Ese’eja Native Community of Infierno. Skirting Puerto Maldonado, we drive 20 kilometers to the Tambopata River Port (a communal business) to enter the Native Community of Infierno.
  • From the Tambopata River Port you will take a 45 minute boat ride to the Posada Amazonas taking you to the community’s Primary Forest Private Reserve.
  • Upon arrival, the lodge manager will welcome you and brief you with important navigation and security tips.
  • A twenty minute walk from Posada Amazonas leads to the 30 meter scaffolding canopy tower. A bannistered staircase running through the middle provides safe access to the platforms above. From atop you obtain spectacular views of the vast expanses of standing forest cut by the Tambopata River winding through the middle. Now and then toucans, parrots or macaws are seen flying against the horizon or flocking to the treetop next to you.
  • A daily presentation on the Infierno ecotourism project is available every night from a staff member.
  • Overnight in Posada Amazonas.

Day 2: Oxbow Lake Tour/ Parrot Clay Lick/ Ethnobotanical Tour

  • Visit Tres Chimbadas Oxbow Lake, a thirty minute boat-ride and forty-five minute hike from Posada Amazonas. Once there you will paddle around the lake in a catamaran, searching for the resident family of nine giant river otters (seen by 60% of our lake visitors) and other lakeside wildlife such as caiman, hoatzin and horned screamers.
  • Visit a clay lick only twenty minutes away from the lodge. From a blind located about twenty meters away you will see dozens of parrots and parakeets descend on most clear mornings to ingest the clay on a river bank. Species such as the Mealy and Yellow- Headed Amazon, the Blue-Headed Parrot and Dusky Headed Parakeet descend at this clay lick. The clay lick is most active at dawn and during the late mornings and mid-afternoons.
  • A quick boat ride downriver leads you to a trail designed by the staff of the Centro Ñape, a communal organization that produces medicines from forest plants and administers them to patients who choose their little clinic. They have produced a trail which explains the different medicinal (and other) uses of selected plants.
  • You will have the option of hiking out at night, when most of the mammals are active but rarely seen. Much easier to find are frogs with shapes and sounds as bizarre as their natural histories.
  • Overnight in Posada Amazonas.

Day 3: Puerto Maldonado

  • At dawn you can go for an optional visit to the clay lick.
  • After breakfast, you will go for a hike accompanied by an Ese'eja who will explain how the forest is used in their everyday life: for food, medicine, construction materials etc.
  • In the afternoon you will hike a different trail that crosses a floodplain and a bamboo forest.
  • Overnight in Posada Amazonas.

Day 4: Arrive in Cuzco/ Transfer to Sacred Valley

  • You will be received at the Cuzco airport and taken to the legendary Sacred Valley, the source of agricultural products for the city of Cuzco since Inca times. There, you will check into either the beautiful Sol y Luna hotel or the Kuychi Rumi lodge.
  • After settling in, you may wish just to relax in the hotel, acclimating to the altitude while enjoying the majestic scenery, dominated by the imposing peaks of the Vilcanota mountain range.
  • If you have the energy, the local town is well worth exploring with the likelihood of hearing the language of the Incas, Quechua, being spoken as you wander around.
  • Tonight, you can try some of the culinary specialties of the region before a peaceful night’s rest.

Day 5: Sacred Valley Tour

  • After breakfast, you will be taken on a private tour through the Sacred Valley of the Incas to see their awe-inspiring stone structures, which echo the past to this day. These remain important archeological sites for researchers, and still circumvent the lands used by the locals for agriculture.
  • You will visit the impressive ruin of Ollantaytambo and have the opportunity to visit a local artisan market in Pisac to enjoy the beautiful handicrafts on sale and observe the traditional dress worn by many, not just for tourists, but as part of the cultural heritage of the local people.
  • Before returning to your hotel in the late afternoon you will have the opportunity to eat typical Andean food in a local restaurant.

Day 6: Train to Machu Picchu/ Machu Picchu Tour

  • Today, after breakfast, you will take the train to Machu Picchu, where you will witness first-hand the majestic ruins of the Inca citadel. After passing through the main entrance to the ruins you come across the numerous buildings with intricate designs and very complex stone masonry.
  • Climbing up a stone pathway, you reach a building called the Watchman's Hut with a wonderfully impressive view over the ruins and Huayna Picchu towering behind it.
  • At the far end of the ruins, close to Huayna Picchu, is the Sacred Rock. From the Royal Sector you can look straight towards the principle baths and the Temple of the Sun. From overwhelmingly crafted terraces to artistically constructed temples and buildings, the list goes on and on.
  • Later, you will descend to the local town of Aguas Calientes, where your hotel for the night is the luxurious El Pueblo Lodge, beautifully built in harmony with the high rainforest of the area.

Day 7: Free Day/ Train to Cuzco

  • Wake up early or sleep the morning away! Today you will get the opportunity to rest and visit the local town of Aguas Calientes or ascend once more to the ruins to explore some more.
  • For the adventurous, a climb up the iconic mountain of Huayna Picchu is a must as it soars above the surrounding landscape giving way to views of the expansive Andes.
  • In the afternoon, you will ride the train back to the city of Cuzco in first-class, which affords extra comfort, good food and even a fashion show!
  • Once back in Cuzco, you will stay either at the world-renowned Monasterio hotel (deluxe) or the beautiful Novotel hotel (boutique).

Day 8: Cuzco City & Ruins Tour

  • Today you finally get the chance to explore the magical city of Cuzco and its environs, where many wonders await.
  • This afternoon, you will tour the city and visit some of the nearby sites: the baroquely-inspired Cathedral symbolizing the explosion of Christianity into the Andean world; the dense and colorful local market; and the many delicious restaurants and bars enjoyed by locals and visitors alike!
  • In the afternoon, you will visit the jaw-dropping ruins of Sacsayhuaman, where gigantic structures of rock were conjoined in perfect symmetry. This ruin is an imposing example of Incan military architecture – a fortress built from massive slabs of granite to safeguard the city from possible attacks by the Antis, an invading force from the East.
  • At Tambo Machay, you will be able to decide for yourself the original purpose of this structure: theories include a resting place for the Inca, a hunting ground, or the site of a water cult. The ruins consist of a number of fountains and a large ceremonial stone bath known as the Bath of the Inca.

Day 9: Cuzco Shopping Tour

  • Today you will visit the many artisan stands where amazingly skilled craftsmen knit beautiful textiles and give shape to pottery, carvings, jewelry and more.
  • At night, you have the option of enjoying Cuzco’s wild nightlife, or making the most of your distinctive hotel and its facilities.

Day 10: Cuzco/ Puno

  • Upon arrival, you will be picked up and taken to your hotel: either the beautiful Libertador Hotel with its traditionally inspired colonial architecture, or the exclusive Casa Andina, which offers a gorgeous view of Lake Titicaca.

Day 11: Lake Titicaca Tour

  • Tour the world’s highest navigable lake at 3820km above sea level which is at the same time South America’s largest lake.
  • You will have a full-day boat tour of the artificial islands of Uros as well as the natural islands of Taquile and Amantani, where you may mingle with the local population and see their unique handicrafts and style of dress.

Day 12: Transfer Out

  • Private transfer to the airport or bus station to continue your journey in Peru.
