Day 1: Cusco (3,350m) - Km82 - Wayllabamba
- Wake up early and have breakfast at the hotel before our guide picks you up to drive you to the start of the trail (approx. 2 hours) taking you through the Sacred Valley to Ollantaytambo where we stop to take a break. Continue onwards to Km 82 - the start of the trail. Here you will enjoy the view of Veronica Snow Mountain (5,720 m). After walking for about 3 hours, you will have lunch close to the Llactapata Ruins. Continue the trek through lush farmland and woodlands to the first camp at Wayllabamba.
Day 2: Wayllabamba - Warmiwañusca - Pacaymayo
- After breakfast, begin walking the most demanding part of the trail. After 3 hours of walking you will reach the highest point in the Inca Trail, Warmiwañusca, or more commonly known as Dead Woman’s Pass (4,200 m). This is a wonderful spot to take out your camera to capture beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. After lunch, continue down to Pacaymayo where we set up camp and end the evening with a nutritious dinner.
Day 3: Pacaymayo - Phuya Patamarka - Wiñay Huayna
- Today you will ascend towards the second most important pass on the trail which lies at 4,000 m, reaching the Inca Ruins of Runkurakay and the Inca citadel of Sayacmarca. Continue trekking towards Puya Patamarka ('Cloud Level Town'), another important archaeological monument, where lunch will be served. After a short break continue walking to Wiñay Huayna ('Forever Young'), a beautiful Inca construction. Camp near the ruins and have well deserved nutritious dinner.
Day 4: Arrive at Machu Picchu
- You arrive at the Inca 'Sun Gate' just before sunrise, the fog lifts and you are looking down onto Machu Picchu just as the Incas did centuries before you. The sight is awe inspiring - a sprawling temple bathed in sunlight.
- You are now able to visit the site and see the carved hitching post of the sun, the contoured walls fitting into every curve of the natural rock, the amazing jigsaw puzzle of individual building blocks in which no mortar was used and which have withstood centuries of earthquakes, the steep thousand meter high mountain- up which these blocks were raised- high above the valleys, the intricate irrigation system and terraced fields. This structured, intricate citadel is in complete contrast to the wild vision of mountain tops and gorges. Although you surely will not yet be ready to, in the afternoon you can take a comfortable train back to Cuzco, or as an option, you may stay overnight in Machu Picchu- which we highly recommend.
